Mark Twain Museum to Receive Literary Landmark Award on April 24th

On Saturday, April 24th at 7 p.m. the MarkTwain Museum will receive the Literary Landmark Award in a ceremony at theMuseum Gallery at 120 N. Main St. This is a national award given by theAmerican Library Association’s Association of Library Trustees, Advocates,Friends and Foundations, ReadMOre Missouri and the Missouri Humanities Council.The site was chosen to be dedicated as a Literary Landmark by ALTAFF tocommemorate 2010, “The Year of Mark Twain.” The ceremony will include aperformance by Dr. George Frein, a Chautauqua Mark Twain interpreter andscholar.  The event is free andopen to the public.

“The Museum is grateful for this recognition and for thesupport provided by Hallie Yundt-Silver at the Hannibal Free Public Library,”said Museum director, Dr. Cindy Lovell. “We are proud to receive such a distinctive award, especially during thishistoric year.”

Dr. George Frein, who will portray Mark Twain at theceremony, is Professor Emeritus of Philosophy and Religion at the University ofNorth Dakota and Adjunct Professor of Religion at Furman University inGreenville, South Carolina.  Dr. Frein portrayed Mark Twain for the GreatPlains Chautauqua Society from 1994-1997, performing every summer in Oklahoma,Kansas, Nebraska and the Dakotas.  He has also presented Mark Twain aroundthe country from the state of Washington to Florida for humanities councils,colleges, schools and libraries.  He is currently the director of theNational Chautauqua Tour, a group of humanities scholars making Chautauquaavailable nationwide.
