The Museum is Traveling the World with Mark Twain!

Anticipating the celebration of the 175th anniversary of Twain’s birth in 2010, the Mark Twain Boyhood Home & Museum is setting the author off on another ‘around the world tour.’  Each month, the museum will have an educational program featuring a country that Twain visited in his many world travels.  Known for his around the world lecture tours and extensive international travels, these programs will begin with a brief introduction of Twain’s association with the country and follow with a fascinating program on that month’s country by a modern-day resident or former resident.

“We are very excited about this imaginary world tour,” says Megan Rapp, Manager of Marketing and Community Relations for the Mark Twain Boyhood Home & Museum.  “This will give the community a chance to relive some of Twain’s travels and learn about countries around the world from people that have lived there.  Our presenters will talk about their native country in a variety of ways, including stories, keepsakes, and traditional foods.”

Rapp said after the museum staff decided on the programming for the year, they were amazed at the cultural diversity to be found in the Hannibal area.  “Many of the presenters will be current residents of the Hannibal area.  We are very excited to be able to draw on Hannibal’s cultural diversity to talk about its famous native son.”

Twain traveled extensively throughout his life, first heading out west as a young man to seek his fortune and later in life traversing the globe on well-publicized lecture tours.  “Twain is often viewed as America’s first internationally known celebrity”, says Dr. Regina Faden, executive director of the museum.  “He was famous for his storytelling ability; both as an author, as most people remember him today, and as a humorist and lecturer, which he was well known for in his lifetime.  These programs will give our presenters the opportunity to tell their own stories about the countries that Twain visited many years ago.”

The programs are planned for every month - please check our events calendar for dates, times and countries.
