You may have heard of the books The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, but have you ever heard of Tom Sawyer Abroad, The Prince and the Pauper and Tom Sawyer Detective? These are all books written by Mark Twain for kids. Why not discover some of these books for yourself? Check your local library or bookstore. Are you an aspiring writer? Young Sam Clemens worked as a typesetter as a young boy and often submitted his own stories for publication in local papers. This program is sponsored by Stetson University in DeLand, Florida and the Mark Twain Museum. Students presently in grades 5-8 are invited to submit their writing sample and a teacher recommendation by the deadline of January 15 each year. Twelve students are awarded full scholarships (including airfare) to spend a week (June 22-26, 2009) in Hannibal, Missouri learning how Mark Twain used real settings, real people, and real experiences to create his enduring work.
